From the Desk of an Educator

"Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual. Anyone who either cannot lead the common life or is so self-sufficient as not to need to, and therefore does not partake of society, is either a beast or a god. "
Aristotle (Politics)

This could be why my dog doesn't have a facebook account - but then again - it wouldn't shock me if someone set one up for God... or their house pet for that matter.

Different types of ... well... social... anything!

Facebook

Facebook is a social networking service and website launched in February 2004, operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc.[1] As of July 2011[update], Facebook has more than 750 million active users.[6][7] Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Facebook users must register before using the site. (Wikipedia.org)
It's like a gateway drug.  First comes the Facebook account, then comes the twitter account, then you are off and running with diigo, delicious and whatever else you can get your hands on to tell people your opinion.  I'm surprised someone hasn't created 'soapbox.com' and linked them all together.  Wait- I should google that- someone probably did.  Create an account for free.  Beware of possible highschool stalkers.  Seriously.

Twitter

Twitter is a website, owned and operated by Twitter Inc., which offers a social networking and microblogging service, enabling its users to send and read messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's profile page. (Wikipedia.org)
I personally love it, and if you link it (yes these can all be linked) to your facebook account- you can update your status without ever setting foot back in your facebook account again.  Sometimes we all need a break, ya know?  So twitter is a fantastic resource for all things you'd like to spend only 140 characters reading about - whether it's information from the Department of Education, or complete nonsense.  I've taken a liking to both types of information.  Some of these accounts can be quite humorous!  Create an account for free.  Beware of spam accounts trying to FOLLOW you.  Lock down your account immediately.  Seriously.  My twitter name is beckertrawitz.

Diigo

Diigo (pronounced /ˈdiːɡoʊ/[1]) is a social bookmarking website which allows signed-up users to bookmark and tag web-pages. Additionally, it allows users to highlight any part of a webpage and attach sticky notes to specific highlights or to a whole page. These annotations can be kept private, shared with a group within Diigo or a special link forwarded to someone else. The name "Diigo" is an acronym from "Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff".[2] (Wikipedia.org)
Diigo has been interesting for me because as I've shared websites in the past, I found it to be annoying and then just stopped.  I know social bookmarking has been around for awhile - but as a newbie to this form of 'socializing', I've found it to be helpful in collaborating with others in the field of education.   You can find my account under beckertrawitz
Other social bookmarking sites include (but are not limited to): digg, stumbleupon, reddit and delicious.

Pinterest

Pinterest is a place to catalog the things you love and (again) share it with the world - whether or not anyone cares.  My pinterest.com account is under beckertrawitz.

Glogster

Glogster is a social network that allows users to create free interactive posters, or glogs. A glog, short for graphical blog, is an interactive multimedia image. It looks like a poster, but readers can interact with the content.[2] Glogster was founded in 2007. Currently this social network has over one milion registered users. (wikipedia.org)
This is pretty cool.  Create a poster using some pretty cool looking items and then share it.  The ideas are endless!
